‘The Witch’ (2015)

Over the past few days, I have been enjoying watching the trailer for The Witch (2015), a horror movie about witchcraft, Puritanism, wilderness and the New World. The film has received excellent reviews and a recent Buzzfeed article, ‘The Movie That’s Going To Make Witches Scary Again’, shows the level of consideration and through that has gone into making it.

I know Sam has blogged a great deal on the witch (you can read her posts on sexualising the witch, the witch in her childhood memories, and the sympathetic witch on the blog) so this should make a welcome addition to the representation of the witch. Hopefully we can both catch it and post our opinions here.

Oh, I was going to post on this, too! So, witches are the new zombies; I think this just shows just how uncannily prescient Sam and the OGOM Project are, having grasped the Zeitgeist and begun investigating witches.

Great minds/ synchronicity. It looks so good. Though possibly too scary for me. I’m not sure. I think I like my witches more sympathetic.

I am a fan of the sympathetic witch too but want to go back prior to Practical Magic which merges the sympathetic witch with Mary Poppins in the finale. I still love the movie as it is saved by Sandra Bullock’s romantic sensibilities I think.
I am currently obsessed with John Dee’s mirror and hoping to catch the show and the witch exhibition at the John Rylands. Would like to open up OGOM 4 to magic (with an emphasis on British texts…..

Definitely interested in British texts. I saw an advert for ‘The Forest’ and got really excited that it would be some excellent British rural ecoGothic but the trailer showed that it was simply re-hashing East Asian horror. Very frustrating.
