Vampire graves unearthed in Bulgaria – the 7th such site in two years!

Archaeologists have unearthed a vampire burial site in Bulgaria. These medieval corpses were found to have been buried with a metal stake through their hearts to prevent them from returning to menace the living. This is the 7th vampire grave to have been dug up in two years. There are earlier accounts relating to similar graves in Poland. Our first ‘Reading the vampire’ session saw us discussing how long the vampire myth has endured. Are vampires as old as as the world as Frayling claimed or a time specific being having their annus miribilis in 1732? The eighteenth century vampire of the European Enlightenment is where our course begins but stories of medieval vampires have endured   and are currently enjoying a vogue. I wonder what my students will make of these latest reports?
